I was driving home the other day and i heard this song. I dont endorse the group that sings this but the message of this song blew me away. Sometimes in the Christian life it is difficult to stay close to God. And it’s not until you’re farther than you wanted to be that you see how far you’ve drifted. This song helped me see a lacking in my spiritual life. The first verse of this song hit me straight in the face. I’m gonna post the words and also link a youtube video of the song. Again, i do not endorse the group, just the song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6J5TzSE_18&feature=fvw

I made You promises a thousand times
I tried to hear from Heaven
But I talked the whole time
I think I made You too small
I never feared You at all. No
If You touched my face would I know You?
Looked into my eyes could I behold You?

(CHORUS)
What do I know of You
Who spoke me into motion?
Where have I even stood
But the shore along Your ocean?
Are You fire? Are You fury?
Are You sacred? Are You beautiful?
What do I know? What do I know of Holy?

I guess I thought that I had figured You out
I knew all the stories and I learned to talk about
How You were mighty to save
But those were only empty words on a page
Then I caught a glimpse of who You might be
The slightest hint of You brought me down to my knees

(CHORUS)
What do I know of You
Who spoke me into motion?
Where have I even stood
But the shore along Your ocean?
Are You fire? Are You fury?
Are You sacred? Are You beautiful?
What do I know? What do I know of Holy?

(Bridge)
What do I know of Holy?
What do I know of wounds that will heal my shame?
And a God who gave life “its” name?
What do I know of Holy?
Of the One who the angels praise?
All creation knows Your name
On earth and heaven above
What do I know of this love?

(CHORUS)
What do I know of You
Who spoke me into motion?
Where have I even stood
But the shore along Your ocean?
Are You fire? Are You fury?
Are You sacred? Are You beautiful?
What do I know? What do I know of Holy?
What do I know of Holy?
What do I know of Holy?

I would say most people have experienced some kind of déjà vu experience. This is where you do something for the first time but for some eerie reason it feels like you have done this before. Well I was doin my devotions the other day and read out of Luke 2. I was reading about where Joseph, Mary and Jesus went to Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover. When they were leaving it says that, ” Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem” but he problem is that his parents didnt realize he was gone until later on. Joseph and Mary finally realize it and go back to Jerusalem. They find him three days later sitting in the Temple both asking and answering questions. When they find him they are amazed. Mary asks him why he has made them worry like this. And Jesus responds by saying, “Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you know that I must be about my Father’s business.”

I love what Robert Morgan wrote about this:

“Twenty-one years later, it was déjà vu all over again:

Same city – Jerusalem

Same time – Passover

Same Anguish – Jesus is gone!

Same duration – Three days

Same reaction at His appearance – Astonishment

Same rational – He was about His Father’s business

There was nothing accidental about His twelve-year-old adventure. It was a prophetic preview, and we are still astonished at His understanding and answers.”

There are many beautiful hymns that can really stir you. And there are many hymns that have incredible stories behind them. One hymn that has both of these aspects is the hymn “It Is Well With My Soul.” This hymn is filled with some powerful words, but when the story is taken into account then it takes on an even bigger meaning.

Written by Haratio Spafford. He and his wife Anna had 5 children. They had one son, the oldest, and four girls. in 1871, shortly before the great Chicago fires, his oldest son died. Then because of the great Chicago fires he was all but ruined financially. In 1873 he planned to travel to Europe with his family. Just before they were to leave, he was delayed with some business. So he sent his family to Europe and was going to leave a few days later and meet them there. During the trip across the Atlantic, the ship that his family was on had a collision with a sailing ship and sank very quickly. All four of his remaining children died. His wife Anna survived and sent him a letter with only two words written on it, “Saved Alone.” While Spafford was sailing to meet his grieving wife he passed the place where his four daughters died. It was there where he pinned these words:

” When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrow like sea billows roll. Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well with my soul.”
